How do I deal with losing my friend to Dementia?

She is increasingly abandoning personal responsibilities, even personal hygiene. She at times says hostile. cruel and inappropriate things from events from many years ago. It seems she wants to hurt me emotionally. I don't know how to deal with losing my best friend.
