Is it possible to change a career from being a pediatric nurse to a Pediatrician?

I am currently majoring in nursing. I've always wanted to be a doctor and I think going into pediatrics would be a great career option for me, for I love babies and children. But someone told me that med school is a whole different route than nursing school and I should have went to med school right out of high school. I was thinking about starting out as a nurse to gain experience and go to med school while I'm a nurse. I am 30 years old and want to start my career at a young age. Is it possible to transition into a pediatrician from a pediatric nurse, and should I take this route?
