If Christianity is(allegedly)so hostile re: education,why did so many U.S. universities have Christian origins?

Even many state universities in the U.S. started as seminaries. And Ivy League schools such as Harvard had early mottos which mentioned Christ and faith and serving God virtuously. (Of course, long before that, the monasteries of Europe kept literacy alive and preserved countless clic works from the ancient world.) So why the claims of an alleged Christian hostility toward education/ knowledge/science?
