Are school shootings just an American thing?

No. There have been school shootings in other countries. However, they happen to be more prevalent not just because of a larger population but also due to Americans' unique fascination with violence in general. After all, it is the US that wages the most wars along with having one of the highest crime rates in the industrialized world.
