Any travel tips for novice traveller soon to go to Kochi in Kerala, South India please!?

6 week trip, starting in south and working up to Delhi by christmas. Have never been to asia or been backpacking for more than a fortnight so any red hot travel tips in general, and any relating to my journey in particular, would be awesome.
